Principles of Effective Membership

The Preemie Parent Alliance is a network of NICU family support groups. We are individuals with different ideas, philosophies, personalities. We come together as an alliance to support one another, develop networks, and build relationships. Our goal is to make our member’s programs stronger and more effective, empowering them to strengthen their ability to serve NICU parents.

The following principles are guidelines to become a more effective member. The principles are presented in three parts:

SELF – how our personal actions reflect our personal values. OTHERS – our relationships within the alliance. COMMUNITY – taking PPA’s message to the public.

SELF

Integrity – We are honest and have strong moral principles

Kindness – We are friendly, generous, and considerate.

Responsibility – We are morally accountable for our behavior. We take accountability and responsibility for our own organizations.

Caring – We are kind and are concerned for others wellbeing

Patience – We have the capacity to accept or tolerate other’s opinions and ideas

Open-Minded – We are willing to consider new ideas

Responsible – We accept responsibility to disseminate any unique materials developed from published data so as to be in adherence with proprietary rights and copyright laws.

OTHERS

Collaboration – We embrace the action of working with others to produce or create something great. Collaboration is done in an environment of mutual trust, recognition, shared decision- making, open dialogue and respect.

Supportive – We provide encouragement or emotional help when needed

Teamwork – We are more effective together. We understand that relationships between and among members are an important vehicle for growth. We engage other members as partners in the process. We seek to strengthen relationships among members in a purposeful manner to enhance efforts to serve NICU families.

Encouragement – We freely give others support, confidence, and hope

Understanding – We are sympathetically aware of other people’s feelings and we are tolerant and forgiving

Selfless – We are concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with our own..

Empowerment – We encourage others to become stronger and more confident

Respect – We admire others for their abilities, qualities, and achievements. The worth, integrity, dignity, uniqueness and human rights of all will be respected regardless of ethnicity, gender, social/economic status or sexual orientation.

Community

Professionalism – We are competent and confident public advocates for PPA

Quality – We project a high standard of insight and enlightenment

Reliability – We are a dependable, consistent resource, carrying the message of advocacyfor NICU families.

Loyalty – We will not represent any position as being that of The Preemie Parent Alliance unless the position has been approved by the members and its Leadership Team.

The Preemie Parent Alliance is here to advocate for NICU parents by supporting family centered programs throughout the world. We are a resource, a mentor, a clearing house of information, a collective voice and an advocate for those who support NICU parents. We collect ideas and information, develop best practices and share information as we support NICU parents. All groups with an active membership have a voice and a vote. Your ideas and opinions are valued, respected, and will be heard.
