Pebbles of Hope

Herndon, Virginia

Overview

Pebbles of Hope is a United States-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to helping premature babies around the world survive and thrive. By leveraging the power of media, technology and community to provide education and training to parents, birth attendants, and community health workers, we are working to give premature babies born in underserved areas an increased chance at survival and the opportunity to lead a healthy life.

The fact is that prematurity is dangerous for babies. Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn death, even in the US. But 75% of these deaths are preventable with simple, cost-effective interventions, and many more babies born too soon can avoid a lifetime of challenges with the proper care, nutrition and support for their development.

Through media outreach, mentoring and training, Pebbles of Hope is raising awareness about these simple interventions. We develop and fund programs to educate parents and other caregivers in underserved areas on how to promote the health and wellbeing of preterm babies before and after they come home.

Our mission is to leverage the power of media, technology and community to help babies born prematurely in under-served areas survive and thrive.

THRIVE GUIDE

An interactive resource guide – available online, CD-ROM and via mobile devices — for parents and caregivers of premature babies in underserved areas to learn the techniques for providing effective care and promoting the proper development of their babies. This tool will include expert information, instructional videos and parent testimonials to guide parents in the care of their premature babies. The Thrive Guide will be distributed to parents through partnerships with hospitals, medical professionals and home visit services. Our first module will cover nutrition, breastfeeding and Kangaroo Care.

THRIVE GUIDE COMPANION MOBILE APP

Pebbles of Hope was selected by a team of developers at the Marquette University mhealth research lab for the development of a mobile app to support our programs. Users of our Thrive Guide can now download a free mobile app for iOs and Android devices that allows them to access our complete library of educational videos and parent testimonials, and connect virtually with experts to receive answers to their questions.

GLOBAL MENTOR NETWORK

Parents that successfully complete our Thrive Guide can join our global mentor network to provide guidance and support to other parents and caregivers of premature babies in resource-limited locations. Mentors will be matched with parents based on shared experience. Mentoring sessions will take place via telephone or online conference.

SUPPLIES PACKAGES

In collaboration with retail and manufacturing partners, Pebbles of Hope will provide supplies packages for low-income Thrive Guide users with supplies necessary to carry out the recommendations in the course.
