Instituto Pequenos Grandes Guerreiros
São Paulo, Brazil
In July 2015, I was blessed with beautiful twin nephews: Tom and Dani. At three weeks of age, Tom had a disease we had never heard of – Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). As a result, he had severe short bowel syndrome. I extensively researched the disease and found it to be more common than I could imagine. This is how Instituto Pequenos Grandes Guerreiros, The Small Great Warrior Institute, was born.
Inspired by Tom, I brought together a group of well-respected individuals. We decided to make a difference by building a database of statistics, encouraging research for the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of NEC, and enable the success of multi-visceral transplants in Brazil. Tom left us on May 21, 2016, after 10 months and 10 days of much love and smiles. His physical presence is lacking, but he is still with us. The Instituto Pequenos Grandes Guerreiros strengthens with its support and its divulgation. We want to change the scenario of this disease, not only in Brazil, but also in the world.
