Who We Are
Preemie Parent Alliance is a network of organizations offering support to families of premature infants. To ensure best outcomes for preemie families, the Preemie Parent Alliance is dedicated to representing the needs and best interests of preemie families in all facets of healthcare policy, care guidelines, advocacy, education and family support. As a national network, we are establishing a unified parent voice to advocate for infants, who cannot speak for themselves, and their families. Together, we represent thousands of NICU and bereaved families across the country.
Founded in 2012, the PPA is a national network of 30 organizations that offer support to families with a critically ill baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Each leader of our member organizations has experienced the trauma of a pregnancy that ended weeks before it should have in a manner they did not expect. It is these experiences that have led them to step out and drive change around the country, providing better access to quality support programs, resources, and education. Our members provide direct support programs, training workshops and educational materials, as well as support resources available online and via smartphone apps for those families who do not have a local organization.
Premature birth is a multilayered, complex, medical and social issue that creates equally complex economic and psychosocial issues for the families who now must face the very real possibility that their child may not live or that their child may have countless long-term health issues as a result. In fact, medical literature now tells us that having a critically ill baby in the NICU causes parents to grapple with mental and emotional health concerns including Postpartum Depression, Acute Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The Preemie Parent Alliance member organizations fill the gap that healthcare providers need for the families of their patients. As a network, we are committed to providing opportunities for our members to enhance their leadership skills, improve support for families, and increase the involvement of emerging parent leaders in all facets of health care policy, care guidelines, advocacy, and education.
Since 2010, the Preemie Parent Alliance has held an annual summit to bring our member organizations together, alongside professionals from the Maternal Infant Health community. To our knowledge, the Preemie Parent Summit stands alone as the only two-day event focused solely on organizations supporting families in Maternal Infant Health, a field of healthcare that has long been dominated by professional provider associations and legislators. This engaging, educational conference encourages a spirit of collaboration and provides an inclusive environment that fosters discussion and more importantly, action. We strive to improve the experience each year for our audience, speakers, and supporters by providing dynamic opportunities for all attendees to seek each other out, network and establish meaningful relationships that positively affect collective impact initiatives.
One of the greatest challenges we face is making our Summit affordable and accessible for our members. Most of our parent leaders volunteer their time for their organizations; therefore they do not have expense accounts or travel reimbursement from a hospital or other employer to pay for continuing education opportunities such as this. Your generous support, at any level, will ensure participation of our membership and enable us to bring in thought leaders and other professionals to conduct workshops; which will in turn help foster the continued growth and success of NICU family support programs, collaborative parent/provider relationships and initiatives across the country. In order to give these medically fragile babies a chance for a full life, and the families an opportunity to thrive, our parent leaders must be fully equipped to grow and sustain their organizations for years to come.

Who Will Be There?
Out of an anticipated attendance of 65 -75 people, 90% of attendees are founders and executive directors of NICU parent support organizations from across the United States. Our members work in local, regional, and national capacities with NICU families along the continuum of care from high risk pregnancy to life after the NICU. We expect 10% of our audience to be made up of other Maternal Infant Health stakeholders, providers and industry leaders.
